19-Year Old Florida College Student Found Dead After Going Missing From Apartment

Miya Marcano, a 19-year old teenager from Pembroke Pines, Florida, was found dead more than a week after she had gone missing from her Orlando apartment. Her family is seeking answers after her tragic death.

Marcano was last seen at the Arden Villas Apartments, where she lived and worked, on September 24. Her family reported her missing after she missed a flight home that evening.

Marcano’s body, which was found in a wooded area in Central Florida more than a week later, was identified after a few days due to the condition of the body. An autopsy report has yet been released.

Marcano’s family is claiming the apartment complex’s management was negligent. The suspect in her death is a maintenance worker at the complex identified as Armando Caballero, who has a master key that he allegedly used to access Marcano’s first-floor apartment before she disappeared.

Caballero, who is 27-years old, was questioned after Marcano went missing but wasn’t detained due to lack of evidence. When a warrant of arrest has been obtained, he was found dead of an apparent suicide three days after Marcano disappeared.

Marcano’s family is planning to seek legal action against the apartment complex.

“We believe the complex’s management was negligent,” Marcano’s family attorney Daryl Washington said, according to NBC Miami. “Did they actually do a background check? What type of background check did they do? And if you did do a background check, is that the type of individual that you would want to give a key fob to be able to get into anyone’s apartment whenever he wants?”

Moreover, they also plan to start a foundation in Marcano’s name and hope to amend laws regarding maintenance workers entering apartment units.
