Everything You Need To Know About Riri Williams Before Her Disney+ Show

Dominique Thorne is bringing a fan-favorite Marvel character to the screen. Thorne will star in Disney+’s Ironheart, a streaming series centered on the brilliant inventor Riri Williams.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced both the casting and the series during a Disney investor’s presentation Thursday in which he laid out Marvel’s upcoming streaming and theatrical plans.

In the comics, Williams is a teenage genius who built her own version of the Iron Man suit in an MIT dorm. After stopping two inmates from escaping the New Mexico State Penitentiary, Tony Stark reaches out to her and gives her his approval as a superhero, but whether Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man is yet to be confirmed. She debuted in 2016’s Invincible Iron Man No. 7 and was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato. She quickly became a breakout character, and in addition to being the hero Ironheart, she has also taken over for Tony Stark as Iron Man for a time and went on to headline her own comic series.

Riri Williams Was Trained By An A.I. Copy Of Tony Stark:
Not long after completing her first armor model, which she built using parts she stolen from MIT, Riri Williams was offered the assistance of an out-of-commission Tony Stark, but in the form of a digital copy of himself that would help train her, help guide her on missions, and even give her the name Ironheart. To anyone still mourning the events of Avengers: Endgame, this may sound like a perfect opportunity to bring Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man back into the MCU posthumously, but to me, it sounds like a threat to what has been a mostly unblemished record of continuity maintenance in the shared universe. However, Riri would later create an A.I. modeled after her late friend Natalie, who sounds like a more natural fit as the Disney+ series’ resident J.A.R.V.I.S., if you will.

Leading a Marvel series continues an upward trend for Thorne, who made her film debut in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, and in “Judas and the Black Messiah“, Warner Bros.’ film about Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, which also stars Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.

Ironheart is one of ten series Marvel will roll out over the next few years, and Feige has emphasized that the films and Disney+ shows will weave into one another. In addition to Ironheart, the new series announced include Secret Wars, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, and Armor Wars, with Don Cheadle reprising his role as Iron Man ally War Machine.

Thorne is represented by  Paradigm Talent Agency, Viewpoint and Peikoff Mahan Law Office.
